CAFAMORE – Carbon Farming Monitoring and Registry

CAFAMORE develops a digital, EU-wide system for monitoring, reporting, and verifying carbon farming activities at the parcel level. By integrating earth observation, soil, and management data, the project enables robust certification and trading of carbon credits. Pilots in seven countries will demonstrate cost-effective, scalable solutions to support climate goals, soil health, and transparent carbon markets.

CAFAMORE (Carbon Farming Monitoring and Registry) is on a mission to make carbon farming a mainstream powerhouse for climate action and sustainable agriculture in Europe. As the continent pursues bold climate and soil health goals, the demand for reliable, scalable, and cost-effective tools to measure and certify carbon removals has never been greater.

A Collaborative, Cutting-Edge Approach

CAFAMORE brings together a dynamic consortium of research institutes, tech innovators, SMEs, and farmer organizations. Together, they’re building a digital infrastructure that blends harmonized data, advanced modeling, and earth observation to deliver precise, parcel-level monitoring of soil carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. This system covers the entire certification chain-from data collection to registry and marketplace-ensuring that carbon certificates are robust, traceable, and compatible with both public and private climate schemes.

Real-World Pilots, Real Impact

The project isn’t just theory: seven pilot countries-each with unique agricultural realities-will put CAFAMORE’s monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) tools to the test. Farmers, advisors, policymakers, and market players will help shape user-friendly, scientifically sound solutions that match the evolving EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF).

Howest: Pioneering Blockchain for Trust and Transparency

Howest is leading the charge on a proof-of-concept central registry and marketplace for carbon credits, with a special focus on blockchain technology. Why blockchain? It offers tamper-proof records, automated verification via smart contracts, and traceable digital transactions-key ingredients for trust and efficiency in the carbon market. While Howest explores this decentralized route, other CAFAMORE partners are testing alternative technologies, ensuring the project finds the most robust and scalable solution. The result? A secure, transparent, and user-friendly backbone for Europe’s carbon farming future-aligned with EU standards and ready for real-world impact.

CAFAMORE isn’t just a project. It’s a movement-bringing together science, technology, and people to unlock the full potential of carbon farming in Europe.
